    Google Maps Live View - Google, Inc.

    There’s nothing like exploring a city on foot–it’s a great way to take in the sights and sounds of a new place. But walking from one place to another can be a daunting task when you’re in an unfamiliar place. Google Maps users often need to jump through mental gymnastics to align the map to their surroundings. This means cross-referencing real-world signage and storefronts to confirm where they are in the world, and trusting the blue dot to determine which way they’re facing before they start walking. To make matters worse, the smartphone’s compass and GPS are often incorrect due to magnetic interference and obstructions—causing users to walk several blocks in the wrong direction before realizing that they’re going the wrong way. To solve the problem of getting users moving in the right direction quickly and confidently, we began working on Live View: an emerging technology that can display arrows, directions, and information overlaid on the real world, using Augmented Reality (AR). After 3 years of meticulous iterative design, development, research and over a decade of Street View data collection, we were able to turn this idea into reality. We have launched AR experiences for navigation, orientation, discovery, and friend finding, helping people around the globe to find their way in complex environments. The superpower of AR is to seamlessly blend the digital and the physical together–and Live View is making this superpower available at world scale for the first time.
