Topic engagement is a powerful tool showing what news topics readers and social media users engage with the most and just how they do so. This service can be employed by editorial teams to decide which rapidly trending topics to allocate additional resources to; measure impact and reactions in near real-time by following direct interactions and social media footprint; analyse topic popularity with certain outlets and authors or even locations; and, if coupled with sentiment analysis, even survey public opinion.

We combined two statistical approaches to make a new solution that had not existed on the market up until then, especially when it comes to media. One approach was Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) and the other one was the frequency of user reactions per document on social networks. This way, we gave a 360-degree view of the information that exists online and how the audience reacts to it. In order to set up the tool, we just needed a list of relevant sources.

 

The starting point of the analysis was news articles, opinion pieces, comments, government and industry updates monitored daily and structured by all of date, location, language, named entities, author and source; and offline data sets. This structured data pool was freely searchable and could be filtered through data points. 

 

Each cluster was described by annotating it with the most frequent keywords it contains. Topic cluster formation can be adjusted by the end-user with parameters for the required number of clusters, several keywords, and boosting or ignoring keywords.

 

Consumers interact with news by endorsing and expressing their opinions on them, as well as choosing to spread or ignore them. These actions were quantified and measured by monitoring metadata from Facebook comments, shares, and reactions to an article; Twitter article shares and comments; and direct article comments. The sum of these interactions illustrated what topics, people, and brands garner the most attention. The article items in the document index were then enriched with the metadata and used as stepping stones to illustrating the significant and engaging topics and entities. 

 

We have created an easy-to-use dashboard that displays thematic cubes in which all this data can be easily visualised and interpreted. The way we structure the articles that go into our database,along with the different data points and metadata that describe the documents, allow us to be quite flexible in visualising this information. Another way to filter is by author, so we can look at the topics an author is writing about and then look at the interactions with them with just a click of the button. The result is the optimisation of the processes in a given media, so that people working there can truly focus on what is really important and interests them.
