  • vSim(R) for Nursing - Wolters Kluwer

vSim® for Nursing, co-developed by Laerdal Medical and Wolters Kluwer (and featuring simulation scenarios developed with the National League of Nursing) is an interactive, personalized simulation resource that helps nursing students develop clinical reasoning skills, competence, and confidence for practice.

In January 2022, we introduced the next generation of vSim for Nursing which delivers an improved learning experience for students, offering highly realistic patient encounters with an enhanced 3D design that immerses students in a safe, dynamic environment as they learn to deliver care to a diverse patient population.

Benefitting their preparation for practice and for their licensure exam, students learn to recognize and analyze cues effectively - such as pain, paleness, urticaria - then take action and respond to unfolding visual and audio responses from “the patient” to improve clinical reasoning skills.

vSim also focuses on elevating students’ interprofessional communication and safety skills through the new situation, background, assessment, and recommendation (SBAR) feature which produces an SBAR score based on the students’ report.

Because vSim allows students to use a nurse avatar to interact with patients in a safe, realistic environment, available anytime, anywhere, it addresses the need that many nursing schools have to support distance learning and provide clinical practice that may be lacking with real patients due to a shortage of time or access, or to support fully online programs.

vSim for Nursing also integrates curriculum resources including suggested reading material from trusted Wolters Kluwer sources, pre-simulation and post simulation quizzes, Electronic Health Record practice, and reflection questions to gauge student understanding of a scenario and support improved competence through remediation., each course area includes a variety of patient diagnoses and situations requiring complex decision-making and reasoning skills.

By recording student interactions throughout its virtual simulations, vSim makes it easy for faculty to measure each student’s success, pinpoint specific weaknesses and deliver instant remediation. Faculty see reports on student performance both in the simulation and quizzes delivered via an on-line gradebook and report. Current, evidence-based decision support content is integrated into vSim through Lippincott Advisor® and Lippincott® Procedures—the same point-of-care content nurses use in hospitals globally.

vSim for Nursing instills the skills for clinical success through realistic patient encounters in the following courses: Fundamentals, Health Assessment, Maternity, Pediatric, Gerontology, Pharmacology, Mental Health, Medical-Surgical, and LPN.
