Why social media is a critical resource for professional finance? Five observations that may change the way you think about the power of social media content in financial services.

Social media has quickly carved out a role for itself in financial services, reshaping how banks and other firms interact with customers, promote products, engage prospects and build their brands.

What is less clear is whether social media has value for professionals focused on trading, portfolio management and investment strategy. The answer lies in how we think about social media. If we characterize it as a monolithic entity that includes every available platform, social media quickly becomes too unwieldy and unreliable to be helpful.

If we narrow the focus to social media as a source of real-time, market-moving news, however, its value becomes much more apparent. Here are five observations that may change the way you think about the power of social media content in professional finance.

MiFID II Implementation: In America and Across the Globe

MiFID II will have an enormous impact on firms and markets around the globe when implemented in 2018.  While the biggest changes will occur in the European Union, many are inquiring about the pending impact in the US.  This session will provide details on the massive changes coming via the EU’s attempt to increase transparency, enhance investor protection, and tighten regulation of algorithmic and high frequency trading.   Panelists will address the effect on vendors altering their product packages and licensing to adhere to the disaggregation mandates taking effect, comment on U.S. based exchanges that will likely face new requirements regarding data distribution with their European-based feeds, and consider the challenges and opportunities that a more expansive menu of data products will create for global consumer firms.   Although the effective date for MiFID II is more than a year away, this is no time for relaxation.

Data Quality-Setting the Standard

Data quality has always been important, but the industry has taken concrete steps to define and measure it. The EDM Council’s Data  Management Best Practices Working Group has been working with industry leaders to define the capabilities needed to run and sustain an effective data management program.  Central to any data program is trust in the data quality.  Our discussion will provide insight on the important dimensions of data quality (e.g. completeness, accuracy, and timeliness), the principal applications where data quality is important (e.g. clearing, settlement, and valuation ) and the development of standard data quality metric categories.  This hybrid session will include both a stand-alone presentation as well as a standard Q&A panel and will address both theoretical and practical aspects of data quality.
